Step 03 / What is W?

A new direction we can't point to

Just as you can't point “up” on a flat piece of paper, we can't physically point in the W direction — because we live in 3D.

X and Y give us a flat plane. Z adds depth. The fourth axis, W, is real in the math — but there's no room left in our world to aim an arrow along it.

The key insight

Think of it like shadows:

  • A cube casts a 2D shadow on a wall — you see a square, but the cube is 3D
  • A tesseract casts a 3D shadow in our world — you see a weird nested cube, but the tesseract is 4D

What you're seeing on this site isn't the 4D object itself — it's the 3D "shadow" that we can actually perceive.

So we fake it: we tilt, project, and slice 4D shapes into 3D so our eyes can follow along.
